Sting is widely known as a singer-songwriter (among other pursuits) and has recorded material in the reggae, pop, classical, jazz and other genres particularly varying the styles since going solo 25 years ago. Sting is originally from Newcastle and before his solo career was the front man for the massive success that was The Police.
His list of songs consists of well known songs like Englishman In New York, We’ll Be Together, If You Love Somebody Set Them Free and All This Time (combined with other ones that are often played in concerts).
Sting was in fact born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner in 1951 and is the eldest or four children. His first guitar was left behind by an Uncle who had emigrated and left a rusty stringed Spanish style guitar which the young Gordon took to.
On this occasion, it’s supporters trying to get hold of Sting tickets in the US and Canada which will benefit with performances from October through December 10th.
This particular run of dates is called the Back To Bass tour, celebrating 25 years of Sting’s solo career and supporting the Sting: 25 Years album.
The nickname Sting comes from a time when he was able to use his guitar skills in jazz bands during breaks and evening concerts – one of the band leaders noted his wasp/yellow jacket colored yellow and black sweater with horizontal stripes and called him Sting as a consequence.
Sting’s time with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers as The Police was a hugely successful one and when the Sting felt that the band had reached its peak they each concentrated on their solo careers, never formally calling and end to The Police.
Sting’s most popular tune is arguably Englishman In New York from the album Nothing Like The Sun although there’ll be many who’ll argue for other songs, there are many great numbers in the Sting back catalogue. Sting has recorded ten solo studio albums.
The most current album in 2010 is known as Symphonicities containing 12 songs including Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Roxanne, When We Dance and more classics from the solo and Police era.
